VR House Number Project

Can you find your home at night by looking for the address sign – not from memory?

If you have a hard time, imagine what a problem an emergency responder may have, when unfamiliar with our neighborhood, trying to find your address in the dark of night?  When an emergency happens, every second counts. You don’t want those seconds to be spent by emergency responders trying to find your house because you haven’t properly displayed your address.

The two most important things to take into consideration are:

1.    Location of House Numbers

House numbers should be located on a sign post or pole at least 4 feet from the ground and visible from both directions.  Avoid putting your house numbers low to the ground.  During the winter, these low placements can be covered by snow.  This could create a serious issue for emergency responders and can cause critical delays in the arrival of assistance.

Plumas County and the Graeagle Fire Protection District have both adopted the Uniform Fire Code, which requires residences to post house number signs in a visible location at or very near the driveway entrance.  House numbers that don’t meet this requirement should be relocated accordingly.

2.    Visibility of House Number Signs

House numbers should be clearly visible at night.  In a rural location like Valley Ranch, reflective house numbers ensure that emergency responders can locate your home regardless of the time of day or night.

The Uniform Fire Code requires house numbers to be highly visible (i.e., large, contrasting color, reflective) and easily read from the street.  House number signs that fail this visibility requirement should be replaced.

Graeagle Fire Protection District is working to improve the house signage throughout the District.  In an effort to assist you in becoming compliant with the Uniform Fire Code, they are offering reflective house number signs for a fee of only $20.00.  This project is undertaken by the Graeagle Fireman’s Association.
